McKeon Group’s Mechanical Division was pleased to obtain the challenging contract to carry out the complete replacement of the boilerhouse and upgrade to the BMS Controls in DCU’s Hampstead Residential Block.

This residential block when fully occupied, accommodates almost 400 people and is critical to campus operation, providing student accommodation during the normal academic year and accommodation for international students and others during the Summer holidays.

The project involved removing the existing 6 number cast iron obsolete low efficiency gas boilers and replacing them with a highly efficient Remeha Quinta 6-Boiler Modular Cascade System using high efficiency frame hung condensing boilers with ultra low NOx emissions.  The installation included a full upgrade to the Cylon Control System to allow the most efficient operation and sequencing of the boiler cascade.

The associated builders and electrical works formed part of the overall contract and were carried out by McKeon Group.

The real challenge was provided by the fact that the window for completion of the works was a three week period in August and September 2015, between when the summer residents departed and the student residents arrived for the new academic year.

This €90,000 value contract was completed on budget and successfully within the constraints of the very tight time programme.  Johnson Reid Associates were the consulting engineers on the project in conjunction with the services of DCU Estates Office.
